چکیده
chwannomas are tumon arising Ilom the myelin-producing Schwann cells of the peripheral sensory nervous system. Of those occuning in the head and neck region, most are infracranial. lnvolvement of cranial nerves containing motor fibers alone is uncharacteristic. Schwannomas of the l2th cranial nerve are rare, with most originating intracranially, although some may extend extracranially with prolonged growth. Hypoglossal nerve schwannomas may rarely arise exclusively along the extracranial portion of the nerve, and to our knowledge eight such cases have been reported [-3]. Schwannomas involving the cervical sympathetic chain are equally rare, with only a handful of cases reported in the literature [41. We describe the unique case of a patient with hypoglossal nerve and cervical sympathetic chain schwannomas presenting concomitantly as submandibular and carotid space masses, respectively. Because of the rarity of schwannomas in these particular locations, this diagnosis was not considered in the interpretation of the preoperative imaging studies.

Hypoglossal Schowannoma: A Case Report and Review of Literature
Introduction: Schawannomas (neuromas, neurilemmomas) are benign tumors originating from showann cells or nerve fiber sheet cells. They are solitary, encapsulated tumors usually attached to, or surrounded by a nerve. Case Report: We present a case of left hypoglossal nerve schwannoma in a 19 year old man who was admitted with progressive left tongue atrophy. Conclusion: Schwannoma of the hy...

OBJECTIVES To determine if preoperative radiographic cross-sectional images can predict the nerve of origin of a parapharyngeal schwannoma and, specifically, whether it originates from the vagus nerve or the cervical sympathetic chain. DESIGN A retrospective review. SETTING Academic medical center. PATIENTS The study population comprised 12 patients who underwent surgical resection of sch...
متن کاملCervical Sympathetic Chain Schwannoma
Introduction. Schwannomas of the head and neck develop from the sheaths of cranial, peripheral or autonomic nerves. Between 25% and 45% of schwannomas occur in this region. Schwannomas of the sympathetic chain are very rare, and the literature describes just over 40 cases, localised mostly in the neck or retroperitoneal areas. Case report. We present the case of a 38 year-old woman with a large...
متن کاملHead and Neck Nerve Sheath Tumors: A 10-Year Evaluation in Iran
Background and Objective: Approximately 45% of benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNST) occur in head and neck regions. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) are less common and only 8-15% of these tumors occur in head and neck region. In this study, we aimed at evaluating the demographic characteristics, pathologic findings, locations, main clinical presentations and family h...
متن کاملA Case of Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor of the Hypoglossal Nerve after Stereotactic Radiosurgery Treatment
Objectives Hypoglossal schwannomas are rare. Surgical resection has been the standard treatment modality. Radiosurgery has been increasingly used for treatment. Radiation-associated secondary malignancy/malignant transformation has not been documented in the literature for the treatment of nonvestibular schwannomas. Setting The patient was a 52-year-old man with an enlarging high cervical/skull...
